In a presentation at the annual conference of the DGPuK's Reception and Impact Research Section in Klagenfurt, Dr. Sabine Reich shows how sexism in online comments shifts participation norms in political online discussions.
With her presentation “Does sexism in political online discussions silence women? (Work in progress)” at the Annual Conference of the DGPuK Section on Reception and Effects Research in Klagenfurt, Dr. Sabine Reich demonstrates how sexism in online comments shifts participation norms in political online discussions. Together with her colleague Prof. Dr. Marko Bachl (Freie Universität Berlin), she analyzes how attacks against women, targeting both female politicians and other women users, create expectations of social sanctions and thereby inhibit participation. In addition, the study examines the conditions under which bystanders respond to sexist comments, for example by reporting or blocking them.
