ZeMKI members Dr. Erik Koenen and Simon Sax publish the book “Prodemokratische Propaganda, Pressekultur und politische Kommunikation in der Weimarer Republik” in 2025.
The volume is dedicated to the topic of pro-democratic propaganda in the Weimar Republic, taking a unique multi-perspective approach. This propaganda manifested itself in both deliberately planned and spontaneous forms, making use of visual means such as images and symbols as well as public space, for example through demonstrations and political rallies.
The starting point and prominent example of the volume is the Three Arrows campaign of the Iron Front, initiated in 1932 by Carlo Mierendorff and Sergei Tschachotin. Its iconographic logo consisted of three arrows directed against the most dangerous opponent of Weimar democracy, symbolized by the National Socialist swastika. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the contributions examine the broad spectrum and diversity of democratic propaganda in press culture and political communication, bringing actions and actors as well as discourses and objectives of pro-democratic efforts in the Weimar Republic back into focus.
